Choosing the folder Codumentor works on

Codumentor works on the folder it was started from — the one the console prints as Working folder when it starts (inside a Git repository, the repository's top folder). Double-click it in Downloads and it works on Downloads. To work on another folder, open it in the browser; you don't need a terminal.

This applies to the Community edition when you use your personal settings folder (the usual double-click install). Enterprise and other setups keep the folder fixed by their configuration.

The folder control

In the header, next to the conversation title, a control shows the current folder name — for example 📁 my-project ▾. Open it to:

Opening a folder

Open another folder… opens a folder browser. You can:

The main button opens the folder you are currently looking at (for example Open my-project). Codumentor then restarts briefly with that folder, shows an Opening … message, and starts a fresh conversation scoped to it. Indexing of a large folder continues in the background; you can chat while that finishes.

If work is already running (for example an answer in progress), Codumentor asks you to confirm before switching — switching would stop that work.

Recent folders

Folders you have opened before appear in the menu (and in the browser). Missing folders — for example on a drive that is unplugged — stay in the list but look greyed out; you can remove them.

The welcome screen

A new conversation's welcome screen names the working folder and its full path, with Open another folder… and your recent folders beside it. Settings and conversation history are not kept in the working folder but in your personal Codumentor folder on your computer.

Conversations from another folder

Conversations are tied to the folder they were started in. If you open one from a different folder, you can read it. A banner names that folder and offers to open it. Continuing the conversation (sending a new message) requires opening that folder first, so the assistant sees the same files the history refers to.

Starting from a terminal

Starting Codumentor from a terminal inside your project folder uses that folder — the same as choosing it in the browser. The next start always uses the folder it is started from, not the one you last opened in the browser; your recent folders are one click away.
